Questions
- What characters does Code 39 support?
- Capital letters A to Z, digits 0 to 9, space and the symbols - . $ / + %. Anything else is rejected with a message saying why.
- Does it add a check digit?
- No. Code 39 works without one, and most systems do not expect it. If your specification asks for the optional mod 43 check character, add it to the text yourself.
- Why is my Code 39 barcode so wide?
- Code 39 uses more space per character than Code 128. If width matters and your scanner reads Code 128, switch to it.
- Where is Code 39 still used?
- In automotive and defence part marking, ID badges, libraries and inventory systems set up before Code 128 was common.
