Where do UPC numbers come from?

From GS1, through GS1 US or GS1 Canada, which license a company prefix; you then number each product under it. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have and does not issue numbers.

Do I need the check digit?

The barcode needs it, but you do not have to work it out. Type 11 digits and the tool adds it; type 12 and the tool tells you if the last digit is wrong.

Does this make UPC-E?

No. It makes UPC-A, the full 12-digit symbol. UPC-E is a shortened form for very small packs, and only some UPC-A numbers can be shortened to it.
