EAN-13 is the retail barcode in Europe, the UK, Australia, Asia and most of the world. In Japan the same symbol is called JAN. Since 2005, retail scanners in the US and Canada read it too.

Use the one that matches the number you were given. A 12-digit UPC-A number is the same product as the 13-digit EAN-13 number with a 0 in front, and scanners read both.

What do the digits mean?

The first digits are a GS1 prefix, then your company prefix, then the item reference, then one check digit. The prefix names the GS1 office that issued the number, not the country the product was made in.

Can I make up my own EAN-13 number?

Not for retail. Stores expect numbers under a company prefix licensed from GS1. For internal stock where no retailer scans the code, Code 128 is the usual choice.

How big should I print it?

Print the SVG at 100% without stretching it, and keep the white margin on both sides clear; scanners need it. Your retailer or printer can tell you the size range they accept.
